Spanish Succession French Painting Guide

And the secret to white uniforms

Today I will walk you through how I painted these 28mm Regiment Bretange figures. They are a part of the French army in the War of Spanish Succession (WSS), which is a little more of a niche period. WSS had never interested me, and the reason I began painting this unit was because of a commission. But now that I’ve read a little bit more about the period, I’m inspired to get some figures of my own.

The Painting

I will walk you through, step by step how I painted these miniatures. I didn’t us anyfancy techniques, just priming, blocking in colors, washes, and a little bit of highlights. All of the paints I used at the end of the article. The unit, is one company of infantry, with red facing, and a battalion gun and crew, with blue facings.

These miniatures were primed white by my client, and for most figures I WOULD NOT recommend it, but it can be helpful if white is the primary uniform color.

I started with the flesh, using cadian fleshtone. I’m not a huge advocate of flesh first, but I felt it was best in the situation.

Next I did shoes and hats, with matt black, bloodtracker brown, mephiston red, and brassy brass.

The leggings were next up. I used mephiston red again, which will be the red I use for the entire tutorial.

I quickly hit the facings, red for the line infantry, and Ultramarine blue for the gun crew. Make sure to get really good coverage here, as it is a part of the model that needs to be shown off.

Next, use Jack Bone to cover all of the straps. The minis are starting to come together now.

Time to do all of the non-metallic pouches, scabbards, cartridge boxes, etc. I used red, Jack Bone, and bloodtracker brown.

A lot gone done right here! I did the musket stocks with gun corps brown, and then all of the metallics, using plate metal and brassy brass. After that it’s clean up time, and highlight the uniforms with matt white. The miniatures are ready for washes.

The secret to white uniforms

Putting the final touches on white uniforms can be tough, with them often looking too dirty or to unrealistic. Luckily, a friend of mine has found an easy fix, use vallejo light grey wash, which I will link at the end of the article. Just apply like any other wash and it will look great.

The non-white parts of the uniform, I put a brown wash over.
